The Pleasures of Counting was not at all a dry read. Coming from a person who has struggled in math class not understanding how individual formulas could be applied to the outside world and not even understanding or remembering all of the rules of math, I went searching for a book that basically explained the `meaning of math in real life' and this one definitely answered all my questions.Cited by: 28. Jan 01, 2001 · "The Pleasures of Counting" is all about the pleasure and interest of being a mathematician, and the book amply proves that these joys are accessible to anyone sufficiently interested, rather than just the elite few. The title is deceptively modest for such a wide-ranging book.

Some parts were fun (Enigma, biological scaling, Einstein), and some parts were boring (anchors, convoys), but this is very likely a matter of personal taste. The level of prose is better than a well-written research paper but maybe not too much better.4.2/5.
