Luhansk Region: Fighting Concentrates on the Towns and Supply Routes Around Luhansk

The Northern Combat Zone around the City

To the west of Luhansk illegally armed groups coordinated by the officers of the Russian Federation performed an attempt to attack the Ukrainian forces near Vesela Tarasivka. This is an attempted to unblock the M04 highway between Alchevsk and Luhansk and cut off the Ukrainian forces south of Luhansk. Continue reading

A Renewed Focus on the Luhansk Region

There is a lot of diverse information regarding Luhansk. Some rumors say that there is fighting in the central city area, while locals say that no one has seen Ukrainian forces in the city center so far. It looks like the military forces have entered the southern districts of town and try to establish themselves there. In the northbound direction the situation has not changed. Artillery duels in-between forces in Velyka and Mala Verhunka continue and the ATO forces entered but then left Luhanska village. South bound from Novosvitlivka, all the territory is controlled by the terrorists. We can also expect an attempt to unblock the M04 highway. Continue reading

Everybody lies
— Gregory House

Prologue

Everybody lies, terrorist «militia» lies about their recent successes, trying to tell the fairy tales about the creation of a full-fledged army, «the best in Europe». The ATO representatives lie, concealing the shortcomings of the operation. If you take the information from social networks, only a small part of it is true. We try to evaluate information from different sources, setting aside personal emotions. Only this way, with your help, we will reach the truth. Continue reading

The Anti-Terrorist Operation in Ukraine: Summary for August 14, 2014

14august

The past day was marked not only by a number of wins but by losses of previously liberated territories. The dynamics of events changes very quickly and we cannot redraw the map every minute or every hour; moreover, that even does not make sense if settlements change hands very often. That is why if we do not change the borders on the map and only show directions of attacks, this means it makes sense. If the situation does not change drastically, the map of the territories controlled by terrorists may start to grow tomorrow. For now we do not make any significant changes to the borders. Continue reading

Situation in the ATO Zone Deteriorates

On August 13 the situation at the fronts has significantly deteriorated due to the increasing build-up of reinforcements from Russia. Last night the terrorists shelled the ATO forces in the area of Vuhlehirsk thus thwarting the attack of the Ukrainian troops on Horlivka and Makiivka. It is interesting that DPR in their summaries presented this shelling as a punitive operation by the “junta”. Such manipulations of information by pro-Russian terrorists in their attempts to brainwash the civilians cause bewilderment: why does their press center work faster and smoother than the ATO press center? Continue reading

The Coming Days Bring Significant Dangers

Analysis of the incoming information shows that in the coming days a counter-attack on the ATO forces positions is possible. Terrorists have accumulated significant forces, a large number of armored vehicles and are almost ready for large-scale actions. The only thing the terrorists desperately need at the moment is ammunition. However, this problem can be solved in the near future with another “humanitarian” aid convoy from the Russian Federation. Fierce Fighting over the Weekend for Control of the H21 Highway

Over the past day ATO forces conducted simultaneous attacks in many different directions. The dynamics of the events is extreme, so this report will not include all actions. Howeverб a focus on the actions affecting the H21 highway is necessary. This highway is the only major road that connects Donetsk with the Russian Federation, and the loss of this highway would spell the defeat of Girkin’s group. Continue reading

The Anti-Terrorist Operation in Ukraine: Summary for August 8, 2014

08082014Successes in the Eastern/Central part of Donetsk Region

Over the past day there are a number of positive developments in the actions of the ATO forces leading to the liberation of territories from the terrorists.

Toward evening of August 7 the Ukrainian forces managed to regain control over Savur-Mohyla and entrench there. At the same time day long actions for the liberation of Miusynsk took place. Continue reading

Terrorists continue to build up their forces in Snizhne, Luhansk, Alchevsk, Stakhanov and Donetsk. The fact of build up of armored vehicles, namely, tanks indicates accumulation of the attack forces outside the city limits. The First Chechen War showed Russia that tanks in a city is not an effective weapon. Continue reading

Map0608

In general, there have been no major operations for the past day, either by the Ukrainian forces or by the DPR and LPR terrorists. The main actions that can be noted were artillery strikes against terrorist fortifications in Horlivka. However, the strikes were delivered too late as the terrorists had left their positions in advance (perhaps they had been warned). Continue reading

THE ANTI-TERRORIST OPERATION IN UKRAINE. SUMMARY FOR AUGUST 5, 2014

Map0508Since the 4th of August report was published in the evening, no dramatic changes have occurred over the interval after the publication. However there are some updates and additions.

Donetsk Region

As it became known late last night, terrorists attacked “Azov” and ”Shakhtarsk” battalions that were heading to liberate Donetsk. It was no surprise at all, considering the militants’ fortifications in that area, but the strange thing is nothing came flying from the rear side, for instance from Amvrosiivka area, which is considered significant. Also the counterstrike towards Mariupol we mentioned yesterday still remains a danger.  Continue reading

Donetsk Region: North of Donetsk and Horlivka

Today Ukrainian troops released Yasynuvata, although confirmation of the situation is still required. This town is an important strategic objective that gives control over the roads to Donetsk from the North. However we should not over-estimate the strategic meaning of this area in the battle for Donetsk. We do not think that terrorists use railways for transporting cargos, and the way from Horlovka to Donetsk via Yenakijeve is still is under the control of terrorist forces. Continue reading

THE ANTI-TERRORIST OPERATION IN UKRAINE. SUMMARY FOR AUGUST 3, 2014

03map
The past 24-hours showed no special activity, possibly due to the Day of ‘Air-Military-trooper’ (a military holiday since soviet time), and the situation remained the same in almost all areas of combat. So we can say that Saturday evening/Sunday morning was relatively calm, which gave both the Ukrainian forces and the terrorists the possibility to regroup. From Monday we can expect new initiatives from both sides. Continue reading

Luhansk Border and Southern Region

The Russian Federation continues to transfer troops across the border, heading towards Rovenky and Sverdlovsk. Given that the Russian troops are dug in near Gukovo (Rostov Oblast of the Russian Federation), the decision of the ATO command to withdraw its forces towards Chervonopartyzansk is probably correct. Yes, this exposes a part of the border but it also move units to a much safer position. Besides, in case of a successful Ukrainian advance upon Shakhtarsk, Torez and Snizhne from the West and North West and an advance from the area of Savur-Mohyla towards Dmytrivka-Dyakove-Rovenky, the terrorists will be pushed out towards the Russian Federation and will become the problem of the Russian border guards. Donetsk Region: North & Western Donetsk and Horlivka

Yesterday we reported that the ATO forces liberated Avdiivka and proceeded to Yasynuvata. Thus the complete encirclement of Horlyvka is almost done. This means that terrorists will probably counterattack from Donetsk in this direction, or may try to breach the ATO encirclement from Horlivka via Panteleimonivka in order to reach Donetsk. The consolidation of ATO positions around Horlivka continues and further information will be reported when it becomes available. Continue reading
